bad news

Unfortunately we have a member of our group who has left college, Mike. We are obviously carrying on without him as there isn't much left to do.  All his work he's done on the editing and posts on the blog will be kept.

Font Idea's

Here are a few font idea's we have gathered so far.....

Cold Night For Alligators

DISTURBED
Nightmare
DISTURBED
Creepsville
DISTURBED
Ghastly Panic
DISTURBED

We have decided to use the Ghastly Panic font as we think its really dramatic, as it looks almost as if someone has scratched it on. This effect goes well with our supernatural horror teaser trailer.

ancilary task..

As well as our filming we are also producing a poster for our film and a cover for EMPIRE film magazine. In order to do this in a short period of time we are going to split both tasks within the group.

We have decided that Louis and Leanne are going to concentrate on the magazine cover while Jessica and Mike work on producing the poster. This will be more beneficial for the group as it saves a lot of time and means than we can then spend any extra time working on finishing the editing for our trailer as a group.

Feedback

Blog is not looking too bad. Can you make it clear in a post, how you are splitting up the ancillary tasks?

As well as working on these tasks, you also need to keep working on editing the video, remembering that you need to do more to it than you would have done last year. May be worth asking about LiveText (LiveType?) for the captions - It works with Final Cut and may give you some more options with the captions etc. Obviously, the text font you use for the film title in the posters etc needs to be the same as the font at the end of your trailer....

magazine cover..

  • We have been looking at the film magazine 'EMPIRE' and have decided to use this magazine company for our cover. Here is an example of the magazine we have looked at to get ideas for our own.

We like this image for a magazine cover as it is simple and shows some form of corruption as the black background connotates evil and emptiness whereas his stern facial expression shows to the audience what the character is like. The shadow on the right of the actors face also reflects back to the connotation of emptiness and evil. We intend to use a shadow on our image as we think that this would connotate to our audience that the women has two sides to her.

  • This is an image we have captured as a rough idea to which we are going to base our magazine cover main image. We have rearranged the lighting to make the left side of the face have more of a shadow than the right. After a few attempts at this we thought that choosing a gold reflector, will help highlight the right side of the face so the left side looks more shadowed. As this is a rough copy, this is far from the standard we expect our final image to be like.

  • As we intend to use EMPIRE magazine we have to make it look professional and so we also are going to use tho correct font that EMPIRE use. Here is an example of the logo.

In order to use the exact font for our title, Louis has used Photoshop and traced the example above. Here is the practise below;

i did this my using the program adobe indesign cs3. and i used the example above to create the version below by cutting out all of the letters single handedly. then colouring them appropriately. and then grouping them all together. this isn't the final version but it is close. its just needs a few finishing touches.

  • As we intend to use EMPIRE magazine, it is important we stick to the layout that they use on most of their covers. We have stuck to the price the actual magazine is and the layout of the captions introducing what is inside. The slogan for EMPIRE magazine is; The UK's No.1 Movie Magazine this the the slogan we will use on our cover. We have decided to do this as we believe that audiences always stick to the familiar and so they would choose our magazine knowing it will just be the same as many other EMPIRE film magazines.

research and ideas for poster

We saw this poster of this horror film and we have chosen to use this of a sort of example in which we are trying to achieve. The main reason it caught our eye is because of which colours are used and the idea it portrays to us an an audience along with the enigma's it creates. The colours black, white and red are very powerful and stand out: black connotes death, white connotes purity and innocence and red connotes blood and evil. All these are what we are wanting to display through our trailer, magazine cover and poster.

This image uses the same colour scheme as the poster above and connotes the same ideas, which is one of the idea's we really want to use. The point of this poster which we really like is the fact the eyes are the main focal point of the poster. Also how only half the face is visible and with the rest of the background just being black. We are wanting to make the eyes in our poster one of the main focal points by either making them stand out being big and bold like this poster or making the pupils bright red and also making them big, attracting the audiences to the eyes making them concentrating on the poster and hopefully will straight away give them the idea of what genre it is and get them wanting to watch it so the film can answer all the enigma's they have created from seeing the poster.

So far we have to full idea's. But we have decided to take pictures of both and play with them to get what we wanted and see which we feel will be more successful.

ancilary task

We are currently thinking of ideas and researching images for our poster to advertise our film, Disturbed. So far we have collected a couple images which stand out to us and are thinking of ways we could pinch their ideas but adapt them to make them our own.

This os one image we have found of the film 'Wrong Turn'

This image stands out to us because of the difference between the two images you can see on the picture. One of the innocent women which is placed in front of the almost distorted image of, it looks, a creepy man. This idea would work well for our trailer as we would be able to display the two sides of the women: her normal self & when she's possessed. The colour tint of the images are outstanding too as its a red tint: immediately giving connotations of gory, blood and death.

Image of the film '30 Days of Night'

This is another we have found,  '30 Days of Nights.' We like this one as its bold and its in your face, straight to point of something not being quite right. Our own idea of this was to have an image of our possessed women as an extreme close-up with her covered in blood and try using effects to distort her face and again use the idea of the images colour grading, making the blood stand out with full colour.

So far..

Now we have finished all our filming we are currently in the process of editing all of our footage in the order of what is shown on our story board. We have made some changes in which will will discuss in our evaluation. So far we have imported the footage onto final cut express and cut each scene down to what we need. We have begun putting it onto the time line and have added our first caption. We have also imported our music which we believe relates to the supernatural genre of our teaser trailer, creating tension throughout. We have not yet added effects to our footage but this will be our next task.

22nd November - Last bit of filming.

Today we filmed the last scenes need for our trailer and filmed more than we expected as we also filmed scenes we had already done but using different camera angles. We did this because we are going to repeat some scenes throughout our trailer, especially the possessed scenes, and thought that using different angles wouldn't make the trailer look unprofessional and boring to our audience. We re-filmed a scene where Grace, who plays the wife/possessed women, falls to floor as we originally filmed it as a medium shot but it didn't look as effective when she fell to the ground, and so today we filmed it as a low angle shot and found this more effective. We also re-filmed the normality scene of grace and Mike eating because we had a problem with this scene when uploading onto the computer. We also used a high - angle shot of this aswell as a close up and long shot, this way we have a variety of shots to choose from when editing our footage. We have now finished all our filming and will now spend time editing.

Filming so far

On Monday the 15th we filmed most of the other scenes we needed to capture. This included most of the scenes we are using to show the normality in their life as husband and wife: grace cooking tea and then them eating tea with one another. Also we got the wife sitting in the corner rocking. Here are some images we got of the actor/actress in their 'day to day' life;

Here is Grace cooking

This is a shot of Grace and Mike eating the meal
Grace cooked for them.

We need to finish of our filming and should get it all done and completed within the next few days giving us enough time to edit and complete our trailer.

pictures of the group filming..

We thought that it would be a good idea to take pictures of the location we chose to film our teaser trailer.

We chose this location as we thought as a group that it looks like a haunted house just from the outside aswell as the inside. This sort of house would definitely be chosen for a horror film.

As we have selected an actor and actress for our film trailer and for them to act as a married couple, we have also taken pictures of them.
This is Mike and in our project he plays the husband.
This is Grace and in our project she plays the wife who is possessed
and also does the sound effect of the baby.

This is a picture of Mike and Grace getting ready
 to film the cooking scene.

We also decided to take pictures of the group filming and also acting.

This is a shot of Grace cooking a meal for her husband and
herself.

This is another shot of Grace that we took of her waiting
for her husband to come home from work.

This is a shot of Grace and Mike rehearsing their lines for
the scene of them both eating tea.

This is a picture of Louis setting up the
camera for the scene of the couple
eating tea. Here he is thinking about the camera
angle and lighting.

Here is a picture of Leanne, Jess and Louis filming and
Discussing the camera angle for the scene.

Here is Mike dressed in an outfit we chose.
We chose a suit as we thought that this
would show to an audience he is a business
man.

This is Louis filming and using a long shot.

We decided to take shots of our actress and actor acting out
scenes. Here is a shot of Mike getting ready for work.

Here is a shot of Grace and Mike acting out a scene.

As Grace also plays the possessed girl aswell as the wife
we took pictures of her whilst acting possessed.

filming.

filming using a long shot.

this is a picture of Leanne filming but using a low angle shot.
The use of this shot connotates to the audience
that the possessed girl is taking over.

Here is a shot we took of Grace acting out a possessed scene.
We took this as we think it shows a great image of the way she
is dressed, facial expressions and the blood.

Location

For our location we believe we have the ideal location for out horror genre. The location being mikes house, we believe that this is the best place in which we can have it as its free and also is easy for all of us in our group to access. Also being mikes house there is no problems on time or anything as we can use it whenever. Here are some shots of our location;

Filming.

As a group we each had our individual roles whilst filming which all meant we all played a part in order for our teaser trailer to be successful. We all met up at the location we are using for our trailer and discussed what we will do and who will do what role.

Mike is being an actor in our trailer and so his role was to act but also come up with useful ideas for lighting.
Grace is another one of our actresses but isn't in our group and so her role was to act, she also became the sound effect for the crying baby and screaming in which we will use over our white noise.
Jess, Leanne and Louis are not being used in the filming and so our role was to film using the camera and make sure the lighting and camera angles were appropriate for the genre of our trailer.

So far we have filmed all the footage we intend to use for the 'possessed girl' and so this involved more of Grace than Mike. We had a problem in getting hold of a baby for our filming and so we have decided not to use one but thought it would be a good idea to use a baby sound effect as we thought that this would become an enigma for our audience when watching the trailer. They may wonder; Is there a baby actually involved in the film? What happens in order for the baby to be crying?

When we next meet up to film we intend to film all the footage which involves 'day to day life' which Mike is involved alot in and also re-film some possessed scenes to make them look better which involves different lighting and angles. We will also be taking location shots and casting shots. We have also decided it would be a useful idea if we take pictures of us filming and then upload them onto blogger.

Props List & Costume List

Here is our prop & costume list:

Due to the font being slightly difficult to read double click the image and the image will become much clearer.

Filming Schedule

Here is our filming schedule.

Feedback

You have added very little to your blog since last week - you cannot afford to throw marks away. You still need to act on my feedback on research and there is a lot missing in the planning section:

  • synopsis of the film and synopsis of the trailer
  • storyboard - needs to be uploaded
  • props list
  • costume ideas
  • schedule
  • group roles for each shoot
  • ideas for music/sound
  • risk assessment form
I would like to see some progress on this before next week, as well as work progressing on the filming/editing

Filming done so far

As a group so far we have done a few shots form our teaser trailer also experimenting on a few shots, we were not able to do the majority of our filming as we had not got the necessary props for that particular scene, so we will finish the rest of the filming off in the next time we get together. But we have got a few good idea's and have even more idea's of shots to film which we will pursue on our next filming time.

Feedback

You have adjusted some of your posts from the last feedback but not all - make sure you do!

You still have a bit of Research to complete:

  • Post from Louis on teaser trailers needs more info - what is the difference in timing? when are the two types of trailers released and what different roles/functions do they have? What implications does this have for your product?
  • Post on titles still needs development
  • Post on branding - a bit thin. You need to explain what branding is and why it is important. You need more elements than just font and colour. This may be easier if you also use the trailer and a few different posters, the DVD cover etc. You should be able to sum up what creates the brand image here and what that image is. You also need to talk about what you will need to bear in mind for your products.
  • More research needed into the horror genre, especially the supernatural sub-genre you are focusing on - possibly add a few trailers/ scenes and posters and list the key genre features, looking at, for e.g., representation, plots, media language, ideologies etc... look back at sub-headings earlier in yellow book
  • Moodboard - look at this and add comment on what image/ features you want to replicate...
  • Research into institution?
  • Research into ancillary tasks - find a few examples of each and list the key conventions of each?
This needs to be done as homework asap. You have made a start on the planning and need to keep going with this. We'll have a look at the storyboard this week.

Actors

Wife (possessed women) -  Grace Norris chosen because has the perfect image of the wife we were wanting to create and we believe that she would be the perfect actor to turned possessed as she has the right skin tone.

Husband - Michael Keenan chosen because volunteered to take the role.

Baby - Baby

Sound effects for the baby - Grace Norris

The Equipment And Technologies We Are Going To Use

To create our teaser trailer there are a number of things we are going to use to achieve the type of genre we want to do. Firstly, we are obviously going to be using a video camera. To edit all our footage and to get all the effects needed we are going to use 'final cut express' There are a number of effects we will be using during the making and editing of our teaser trailer, we will be using effects such as split screen, white noise and also fade in and fade outs, depending on how it makes it look as we are making sure its looks professional. We will be using colour grading to our advantage as it will help us get across the scenes which are meant to look super natural and make certain things stand out, such as the actors eyes. When we are editing as we are using final cut express this will allow us to make the cutting in between each shot fast and this will help us create suspense and also help us to achieve the genre we are wanting to.

Story board

Moodboard

This is our moodboard we created to portray the ideas and the style we want our supernatural horror teaser trailer to include.

We wanted to re-create in our own form some of the images we used on the moodboard. For example the image of the couple in bed, the shot of the girl crawling on the floor and the one where she is sat crouched.  Also the shot of the women stood at the doorway. We wanted to use these images as we thought they where the most effect and the easiest ones to re-create as a few of the others would need expensive equipment to edit.

Feedback

You still need to act on the last feedback post and have not really added much since the last feedback, given the urgency of your deadlines!

You need to expand the post outlining the differences between a teaser and a  standard theatrical trailer - this post is simply not strong enough. Consider what its function is, how it develops its narrative etc and how this is different to the standard longer trailer... and what the two types of trailers have in common and what this means for your product. You also need a general post on the horror genre - what types of horror you get and what sub-genre your product will belong to and the key conventions linked to it - settings, narratives, representations (characters) and ideologies, props, costume, sound, lighting etc..... with some examples of typical films in this genre. Without, these two posts being expanded, your trailer analysis is a bit detached. Each trailer analysis needs to state what its focus is- looking at what a horror teaser can be like??? You also need to be more specific at the end about what ideas you particularly are inspired by in your example.

You have defined your audience but could justify your GRASS choices a little more? Could also look at uses and Gratifications to explore why people like this type of horror film - think about ideas about fear and resolution?

Institution - you have proved your choice has box office form but also need to investigate the type of studio/ production co and distributor who might produce this film, using real examples. You also need to consider when teaser trailers would be released in relation to the main film and possibly at what time of year. You can consider what other elements would make up the marketing campaign for this type of film and where you would release the teaser trailer.... You would need to explain the reasons for these decisions...

Don't forget to research your two ancillary tasks - what do posters and film magazine covers do and what  are their main conventions. Also, you need some research into branding.

Please check your grammar and spellings, too - in places these detract from what you are saying.

Research Of Branding

Branding is a huge part of making a teaser trailer as you need to make something stand out in the trailer either the actors or the genre, but you want that thing to stand out so it can be resembled on other media source's such as the poster or magazine cover. You need to keep all the source's within the same style

For my research of branding i have chosen to look at the movie 'Watchmen' I have chosen this film because I believe it has one of the best branding and how it effects the viewer as soon as they see the same style it automatically makes them think of Watchmen.

Firstly the colouring of the way it is branded and how the title 'WATCHMEN' is written is an easy way in which the viewer can see its watchmen as its the same in the posters and also the magazine covers.

POSTER

MAGAZINE COVER

As you can see on both of the different kind of media text they have the same kind of features which apply to both. Firstly we can see that the writing down the side of the poster and magazine cover are very much similar and the colouring also is similar in the yellow writing and dark background which makes the yellow in the writing stand out and catch the eye of people who have seen the film or poster and make them interested in either reading in what the film is about or even watching the film.

DVD COVER

Even with the dvd cover the colours are the same, also it has the stars  of the film on the dvd cover which they have on both the poster and the magazine cover. Which helps the audience see who the actors are but mainly keeps all the media source's alike.

I believe that the branding used by 'Watchmen' would be a perfect example to get some ideas from as it is always the same and also will attract the people that it is wanting to and also makes everything relate back to the film by using the colours they do and also by using the main characters keeping it all linked to the actual film. Keeping the branding the same is a key element in branding as it always brings everything to relate back to the film.

So as a group we need to remember to keep everything related to the trailer and making sure we make the genre easy to spot for the audience we are aiming for. So if we are making the dvd cover with the actors on the front we should use the actors on the magazine cover also keeping the colours the same and  little things like the same font makes things easier for the eye to realise its about our film.

Horror Genre.

We are focusing on the supernatural horror genre for our teaser trailer and have looked at alot of teaser trailers which have given us inspiration for our own project. Below are some trailers in which helped us think of a story line;

From this trailer of Paranormal Activity 2, we liked the idea of the canted angle at the beginning as this gave away to the audience that something isn't right and so we thought this would be a good idea for our trailer. We also liked how it was the actors that filmed but didn't chose to do this as we would then be copying the whole of the trailer. from this trailer we also thought that the shot of the girl stood in the door way with low key lighting suited the genre well and so we chose to use this idea in our trailer but not in the same location.

The Last Exorcism is another example of a supernatural horror trailer in which we got inspiration from. From this trailer we found that the color grading was very effective as it showed a contrast from when something is normal to where the girl is possessed. We thought this would work well in our trailer but we intend to use alot of drained colors in ours when the woman becomes possessed. The music for this trailer relates well to the story line of the film as it is about an exorcism and uses church like music and so for ours we shall use a quiet style of music and we intend to discuss this when all our footage has been done. In this trailer we liked the idea of the girl holding the camera as she walks and so we intend to do this for our trailer but use a blared effect showing that she has done something wrong.

We have also looked a old film trailers and found that Beyond The Door is a very good trailer showing supernatural as it is set in a house and seems very realistic. From this trailer we have decided to use the idea of the door but have expanded the idea and slamming the door with a scream to follow. In this trailer there is a smash of a plate but no body does this and so this causes excitement from an audience point of view and so throughout our trailer we intend to do this, we will discuss this when filming. The costumes work well as they relate to the time period and in our trailer we will keep this going and use up to date fashion showing it is a 21st century film. We also will dress Grace (our possessed) girl in a white nighty which is typical for a horror genre film.

Analysis Of The Blair Witch

I have decided to analyse the trailer of 'The Blair Witch Project'. I have chosen this film trailer because I believe it has a number of concepts in which we want to achieve, in our teaser trailer. From the non diegetic sounds to the tittles used in the trailer and the way it is acted and how they have put the film in the sequence they have. Also the main reason in which i have chosen to analyse this teaser trailer is because they use a hand held camera within the film, which is what we are wanting to do in our teaser trailer, so i believe analyzing a teaser trailer using a hand held camera could help me see all the conventions used to create this film.

First of all the non diegetic sound at the start with the heavy drum sends an instant shiver down the viewers spine and with it just being a black screen, i believe this sets the genre straight away giving of the impression of it being a horror film. Then the tittle that comes up giving us information on the film again agrees and shows the viewer that it is definitely a horror. Then it goes on to the main characters questioning locals, from where they have gone to, asking them about the blair witch. This diegetic sound shows the audience what the film is going to be about and it will either interest them or not. Then again the tittle that comes up saying 'one of the creepiest films since the exorcism' showing the viewers that it is like 'the exorcism' so if they have watched that and liked it they will be interested in watching this one. The way they have the really quick clip of the dark and then a shot of the tree, then the big gasp gives it an element of scariness, and leaves the viewers with an enigma. The constant black screen with that beat of the drum then how the noise fades out slowly is a great affect of non diegetic sound gives the audience a sense of shock. Then when they are arguing about the map makes the viewers wonder why they need the map so desperately and they see the actors in a state of panic and wonder why they are like this. Then the scene were the person is running makes it alot more scarier as they are using a hand held camera which makes it alot more realistic and makes the audience get into the actors shoes. Once again the non diegetic sound used when the black screen is up puts the viewer into a mind of wondering if anything is going to happen, then when they show us the sort of person made out of trees the diegetic sound of someone saying 'holy sh*t' shows us that they are afraid and wonder what it is, or they know what it is but us viewers dont and we want to know what it is and why its there making us want to view the film in full. Then again it cuts to the running scene using the hand held camera and the lighting used in this scene is just the light from the camera which gives it a sense of reality. Then we get the close up of the girl speaking into the camera and she is speaking with a terrified voice showing us the audience that something has happened which we don't know and she tells us how its all her fault why there like they are, and as she finished when she says 'hunted' straight after the black screen comes on again with that same drum sound which gives the audience a sense of them being frightened or something is going to happen or has happened. And as it ends the last thing heard is a high pitched scream then goes straight to the black screen again with the same sound, then the tittle 'The Blair Witch Project'.

I believe this is a great low budget film in the same genre in which we are wanting to achieve, analyzing this has given me more inspiration and many more ideas on how to get around achieving this genre. And also gave me a few ideas on how to use non diegetic sound and lighting to achieve this genre which will also tease the audience and hopefully get them to want to watch the actual film.

Saw 6 trailer analysis

As a group were are making a supernatural horror teaser trailer, so as a group we need to analyse diffrerent aspects of that. for example somebody will investigate into the supernatural part, someone will look into horror in general. and somebody will look into the teaser trailer part, as a pose to a full length trailer. i will be looking and comparing the difference between the teaser trailer and full length trailer to the same film and then looking to the teaser trailer in more detail. as we are doing a teaser trailer so it is very important that we know what we are doing.

The film i will be looking at is saw 6. And the teaser trailer for your information is the shorter one.

To view the video's full screen double click on the video.

As you can see the difference between these two video's is that one video concentrates on one clip from the film itself and its just like your watching the film. it is complete film footage, no different editing or sound, and that is usually what you would expect from a trailer, whereas in the teaser trailer.

with the teaser trailer , it gets straight to the point and starts telling you facts about the film. which is the difference between a teaser trailer and an official trailer, as this is important as we are doing a teaser trailer. The release dates and roles the teaser trailer and official trailer have correspond to each other. the teaser trailer is released first as the role of that is to make the viewer aware that the film is being released and show a little bit of content what the film has in it. it is usually released around 4 months before the film is released. whereas the official trailer comes is usually released around 2-3 months before the official release date of the film. the role of this is to tell the film viewers what the film story line is going to consist of and to give you a slight better insight of the film than the teaser trailer. it gives away all the key characters which some film viewers like as some people watch films due to the actors that are in it.

so when we are producing our teaser trailer we need to take all of this into consideration. and make sure we have all the contents of a teaser trailer not a full official trailer.
